THE GRIND has never shied away from politics, as anyone who has seen our Twitter account can attest to. We support any party that espouses progressive politics and shows genuine concern for the average person. This leaves us with very few options. We'll also support any party that acknowledges and accept that we've pretty much fucked up this planet and need to do something pretty swift.
To this end, we are once more teaming up with [Untitled] Falkirk to bring you another spectacular evening of music and poetry. We are delighted to announce INVERT - a Falkirk Greens fundraiser. Whether you give a shit about the Greens, the environment, or politics, everyone can appreciate a fantastic gig. After the successes of Home Game, 423, Away Game, and NOMENCLATURE we can say with confidence that this show is not one to be missed. We have the bold Adam Stafford, Ariel Killick, Leela Soma, and John Kennedy, plus more to be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets are £7 and can be purchased here. All the proceeds will go towards supporting progressive politics on a local level in Falkirk. The Grind is changing.
First of all, it would be remiss of us not to apologise for the unacceptable delays people have faced while waiting to hear about their submissions to ISSUE V. Everybody has now been contacted. The quality of the submissions to this issue was staggering and has resulted in our last issue having many, many more contributors than we anticipated. First world problems. ISSUE V will be released when it is ready. Second of all, it may have come to your attention that we no longer broadcast our weekly radio show. Regrettably this is due to the time commitment becoming untenable with our real lives. We would like to thank 98.8 Castle FM for the hospitality they showed us and for giving us such a wonderful opportunity. However, The Grind is not about endings; it is about new ideas and continually pursuing projects that we believe will best showcase the unbelievable creative talent that Scotland has to offer. It is to this end that we are delighted to announce our next ventures. The Grind will be launching a fortnightly podcast with RJ Bayley, host of The RJ Bayley Rock Show on 98.8 Castle FM, recorded at the wonderful Embassy Gallery in Edinburgh. We'll be bringing you chat, discussion, and musings on art, music, culture, science, and anything in between, plus we'll be talking to artists and musicians from all over the world. We will also be broadcasting ALL of the fiction The Grind published in ISSUES I - V. It will be available through a variety of platforms and will be commencing in the coming weeks. Our second venture is intrinsically linked to the first. We will be launching a BRAND NEW PUBLICATION. This particular publication will be publishing written and visual art that could be considered to belong to the genres of science fiction, horror, and speculative and weird fiction, from people all over the world. The Grind is going INTERNATIONAL. We will always have a particular focus on Scotland, however, and our core values will not change. If you have any questions, or would like more information about our various ventures, you can email us; [email protected]. And that is that. Due to recent events, such as NOMENCLATURE and the General Election, we have decided to extent the submissions deadline for ISSUE V until the 31st of May.
Please read our submissions guidelines before sending in your work. Thank you. You can see photos from NOMENCLATURE, our most recent even in Falkirk with [Untitled], by clicking here. Photos are courtesy of the incredibly talented Eddie McEleney.
There are currently two ways to get involved with THE GRIND; NOMENCLATURE and ISSUE V
You can buy tickets for our upcoming event in Falkirk (in association with [Untitled] Falkirk) here and you can read the submission guidelines for ISSUE V here. ISSUE V, the last issue of THE GRIND in its current format, is OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS. Please check our SUBMISSION GUIDELINES and follow them. Submissions close 12.05.15.
Thank you. THE GRIND began in October 2013. We set out to give artists and writers a voice where they did not have one before. In the year and a half that has passed since we have released four issues, a printed booklet, put on charity fundraisers, evolved into a radio show, and hopefully helped some people along the way. I think we have. I hope we have. We have been lucky enough to publish some of the most talented people I've ever known and for that I will always feel privileged. I will never be able to thank enough the people who have helped THE GRIND become what it is today.
THE GRIND was born of desperation. Desperation to do something; to stave off the depression that comes with working in the service industry; desperate to feel like you're making a difference in a world that sometimes does not seem to reward endeavour. A lofty goal for such a small enterprise. However, time marches inexorably. It has become apparent that new opportunities are presenting themselves and they are crying out to be taken. It is to this end that we are announcing the end of the PDF publishing era of THE GRIND. After ISSUE V we will no longer be taking submissions for art and fiction for the intent of publishing them online. THE GRIND as a publication will no longer exist. However, THE GRIND as a brand, as an idea and an ethos, will stride forward into new territory. This is a necessary step in the evolution of THE GRIND and its goal of giving artists and writers a voice. We will continue as our weekly radio show on 98.8 Castle FM and as a brand new podcast and zine, details of which will be released shortly. We will also continue our events with [Untitled]. Our aim has always be to promote artists and writers in Scotland and that is exactly what we shall continue to do, we'll just be doing it more effectively. Submissions for ISSUE V will be open until the 12th of May. All submissions should be sent to [email protected] before that date. THE GRIND does not stop. Nor does it rest. THE GRIND is eternal. |
